In 1677, Karl XI decided to portray all the fanas and stands won as trophies in war. The purpose was to preserve the memory of these signs of victory for the afterworld even if the objects themselves were to be destroyed by age. Erik Dahlberg was commissioned to use an artist. It became Olof Hoffman who came to devote the rest of his life to painting off all the thousands of fanas and stands kept in the Arsenal. He died in the middle of the Great Nordic War in 1709.
